This petition challenges the decision to ban the sale of new petrol-only and diesel-only cars and vans in the UK from 2030. Sure, the rule doesn’t touch cars already on the road, but it still takes away a big chunk of consumer choice and really changes how people think about getting around. For a lot of folks, cars mean more than just getting from A to B — they’re about freedom, identity, even a sense of accomplishment. Plus, people rely on their vehicles to fit all sorts of needs and lifestyles.

There are real worries about electric and hybrid cars, too. Things like shorter driving range, trouble finding charging stations, and the time it takes to charge — these are big headaches, especially if you don’t live in a big city.

Money’s another issue. Building all those charging stations would need a ton of public investment, which means taxpayers pick up the bill. And if you look at the environmental side, you can’t ignore what goes into making these cars. Building a petrol or diesel car gives off about 7 to 8 tonnes of CO₂. For electric cars, it’s more like 11 to 14 tonnes, mostly because of the batteries. Just making the battery can mean 5 to 8 tonnes of CO₂, depending on size and how it’s made. So right from the start, electric cars hit the road with 3 to 7 extra tonnes of emissions on their record. When you add up all the emissions from mass-producing electric vehicles, it’s fair to ask if the ban really delivers the environmental benefits people expect.
