Protect Greenbelt Land and Prioritise Brownfield Development.
We call on the Government to halt all development on designated Greenbelt land and to prevent the reclassification of Greenbelt land as "Grey Belt" for the purpose of enabling construction.
Greenbelt land was established to protect natural environments, prevent urban sprawl, safeguard wildlife habitats, and preserve open spaces for current and future generations. Redesignating this land undermines the original purpose of Greenbelt protections and sets a precedent for permanent environmental loss.
At the same time, substantial areas of Brownfield land remain unused or underdeveloped across the country. These sites already have existing infrastructure and present a more sustainable, environmentally responsible solution to housing and commercial development needs.
We therefore urge the Government to:
* Maintain full legal protection of all existing Greenbelt land.
* End the practice and revoke the redesignation of Greenbelt as " Grey belt" for
development.
* Require local authorities and developers to prioritise Brownfield sites before any consideration of protected land.
* Strengthen planning policy to ensure environmental protection, biodiversity preservation, and sustainable development.
Protecting Greenbelt land is essential for climate resilience, food security, public wellbeing, and the preservation of our natural heritage. Development should not come at the cost of irreplaceable green spaces when viable alternatives already exist.
